What is Ashtakavarga?

Ashtakavarga is a numerical scoring system in Vedic astrology that measures planetary strength across the 12 houses of your birth chart. Each planet contributes bindus (points) to different houses, creating a quantitative map of where transits are likely to produce positive or challenging results.

Sarvashtakavarga vs Bhinnashtakavarga

Sarvashtakavarga (SAV) combines the bindus from all seven planets plus the Ascendant into a single score for each house (maximum 56 points total across the chart). Bhinnashtakavarga (BAV) shows the individual contribution of each planet to every house. Together they help astrologers assess transit effects with far more precision than house placement alone.

How to use your Ashtakavarga scores

Houses with higher SAV scores (typically 28+) tend to give better results during transits, while lower-scoring houses may need more effort. For example, a strong 10th house SAV supports career transits, while a strong 7th house supports relationship timing. My Horoscope computes your complete SAV table and per-planet BAV charts in your full Kundli.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate Ashtakavarga?

Ashtakavarga requires your complete birth chart — date, time, and place of birth. After chart compilation, My Horoscope computes Bhinnashtakavarga and Sarvashtakavarga from your planetary positions; scores appear in your dashboard.

What is Sarvashtakavarga (SAV)?

Sarvashtakavarga is the combined Ashtakavarga score for each of the 12 houses, summing bindus contributed by the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, and the Ascendant. The total across all houses equals 337 bindus.

What is a good Ashtakavarga score?

For Sarvashtakavarga, a house score of 28 or above is generally considered favourable, while scores below 25 may indicate challenges during transits through that house. Individual planet BAV charts have their own thresholds.

How is Ashtakavarga used in transit prediction?

When a planet transits a house, astrologers check how many bindus that planet has in its own BAV for that house, plus the house's total SAV score. Higher scores suggest the transit will produce supportive results.

Do I need birth time for Ashtakavarga?

Yes. Ashtakavarga depends on house positions, which require an accurate Ascendant (Lagna) from your birth time. The more precise your birth time, the more accurate your Ashtakavarga scores.
